How to test your webcam on a Mac

On a Mac, open Photo Booth or FaceTime: if you see yourself and the green light next to the camera turns on, your camera works. For resolution and frame rate, use an online webcam test in Safari or Chrome.

Test My Webcam

Test with Photo Booth or FaceTime

Open Finder → Applications → Photo Booth (or FaceTime). The built-in FaceTime camera starts automatically and the green indicator light turns on.

Using an external webcam? In Photo Booth choose Camera in the menu bar and select your webcam.

Quickest way: test your webcam online

Open the webcam test on this site and press "Test My Webcam".

When your browser asks for permission, choose Allow. Within a second or two you should see yourself in the live preview.

Check the results: camera name, resolution and the frame rate your camera actually delivers. If the picture is dark, blurry or choppy, the test tells you what to change.

Allow camera access in macOS

If the browser shows no picture, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and switch on your browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge). Then quit and reopen the browser.

In Safari also check Safari → Settings → Websites → Camera and set the site to Allow.

Camera still not working?

Quit other apps that may be using the camera, such as Zoom, Teams or FaceTime, and try again. If no app can see the camera, restart your Mac; for external webcams try a different USB port or cable.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a camera app on Mac?

Yes. Photo Booth and FaceTime come with every Mac and both show a live camera preview.

Why is my Mac camera not working in Chrome?

Chrome needs permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Turn it on and restart Chrome.

Can I use my iPhone as a webcam on a Mac?

Yes, with Continuity Camera on recent macOS and iOS versions. It then shows up as a separate camera in apps and in a browser webcam test.
