How does the camera test work?

The test uses your browser's standard media APIs (getUserMedia, getSettings, getCapabilities) and the Canvas and Web Audio APIs. Every value is labelled as detected (reported by the browser), measured, calculated from the current frame, a manufacturer specification, or unknown.

What do I need to test my camera?

A current browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari) on HTTPS, and a camera not in use by another app. Need something specific? Browse the camera database or the guides.

What does the webcam test check?

Each result answers one question: does the camera turn on, which camera is in use, what resolution it delivers, and how many frames per second actually arrive. It also checks lighting and sharpness in the current picture, and whether your microphone picks up sound.

For a clear video call, aim for at least 1280 × 720 at a steady 30 FPS with light in front of you. If the frame rate drops below 20 FPS, the picture is usually too dark.

Camera works here but not in Zoom, Teams or Google Meet?

If you see yourself on this page, your camera and driver are working. The problem is usually in the meeting app: choose the right camera in its video settings, close other apps that use the camera, and check that the app has camera permission in Windows (Settings → Privacy & security → Camera) or macOS (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera).

Camera not detected or showing a black screen?

Frequently asked questions

Why does the site need camera permission?

Browsers hide camera names, resolutions and capabilities until you grant permission. Without it, no website can read any camera information.

Why is my measured FPS lower than 30?

Most webcams reduce frame rate automatically in low light to gather more light per frame. Add light in front of you, and close other apps using the camera.

Can this tool see my webcam driver or firmware version?

No. Browsers do not expose installed driver or firmware versions. For recognised cameras we link to the manufacturer's official support page instead.

What does 'current stream megapixels' mean?

It is the width × height of the video your browser is currently receiving, divided by one million. It may be lower than the camera's sensor resolution.
